5 TIPS TO MAKE YOUR HOME MORE COSY

There are many you can do to make a room more cosy, so I've put together a few tips to help you create a warm, inviting home.

LIGHTING

Lighting is often missed when designing a room and it's one of the most important elements, especially when creating a cosy space. Ideally, you should have seven light sources - yes, seven! This includes ceiling lights, wall lights, lamps and undershelf lighting.

If possible, make all your lights dimmable. Nobody wants to sit down at the end of the day and have a bright ceiling light glaring down at them. Making hardwired lighting dimmable makes it much easier to create a layered lighting scheme. Floor lamps and table lamps are great for evenings when you don't need the 'big light' and try lighting some candles to make it extra cosy.

FABRIC & TEXTURE

Soft furnishings not only make a room look cosy, they make them less echoey, as fabrics absorb sound. Carpet will instantly add some warmth, as will curtains, blinds, cushions and fabric sofas. There are many fabrics to choose from, but to create a cosy feel, opt for some texture with knits, wools, velvets, linens or anything woven.

LAYERING

Layering these textures is key to creating a cosy space. Adding rugs to wooden or tiled floors can help soften hard surfaces, and cushions and throws instantly make a sofa cosy and inviting.

ADD WARM COLOURS

Cosiness can come from warm colours, such as beige, reds, pinks, yellow and oranges. There are warm shades of every colour, including greens and blues, but make sure you choose a shade with yellow or red undertones. Adding warm wood flooring or furniture to a space will instantly add some warmth.

AVOID PURE BRILLIANT WHITE

You can definitely create a cosy home using white; it's all about the layering. However, there are so many whites out there to choose from that have lovely warm undertones, so choose a chalky, warm white for a more cosy feel.
